When Should I Use Solid Film Lubricants?

solid dry film lubricants

Whether you're a novice in the world of automotive lubricants or a seasoned veteran, there are some things you need to know about solid dry film lubricants. They're a lot different than conventional lubricants, and knowing when to use them can make all the difference in the world.

Molybdenum Disulfide

Whether you need a coating that will protect your equipment from corrosion, or you need a coating that will improve the performance of your machine, molybdenum disulfide coating is a good choice. These lubricants are applied as solid lubricants on metal surfaces, and they provide excellent friction-reducing and corrosion-inhibiting properties.

There are several commercial manufacturers of molybdenum disulfide additives. These products are usually used in the manufacture of industrial and aerospace components. A few of these additives are incorporated into lubricating oils. These are shown in the following illustration. In terms of lubrication, molybdenum disulfide has a low coefficient of friction and can be applied to steel or rubber surfaces. Its lubricating action is based on the formation of metal-sulfur bonds. The resulting sulfide layer helps keep the lubricating film in place.

The coatings are typically used in environments where fluid lubricants are ineffective. These include high-vacuum applications, or in environments that experience extreme temperatures. They can also be applied as an impingement lubricant, reducing friction between a part's moving parts. One of the most common solid lubricants is molybdenum disulfide. The chemical structure of molybdenum disulfide is similar to that of graphite. Unlike graphite, molybdenum disulfide does not require external moisture.

The crystalline molybdenum sulfide structure has an extremely low coefficient of friction. This is a great asset for vacuum applications. In addition, the coating has very high yield strength. The coating is also highly resistant to thermal oxidation. This makes it an excellent lubricant for the nuclear industry.

PTFE

PTFE solid film lubricants are used to reduce friction, prevent corrosion, and minimize wear. They also offer anti-galling properties. Some of these lubricants can be applied to metal surfaces by brushing or spraying. These lubricants can be purchased in a range of different sizes and packages. Some are available in nuclear grade formulations, while others can be found in non-hazardous varieties.

These lubricants are used to minimize friction and wear, while also offering excellent resistance to water and dust. They are used in a number of different industries, including aerospace/aircraft, medical/dental, and the chemical industry. The PTFE coating is also extremely weather able, meaning it will stay clean even in the harshest conditions. This makes service and repair work much easier. They also have great chemical resistance, providing excellent abrasion and corrosion resistance.

The PTFE coating is a highly inert material, meaning it does not react with other chemicals. It also offers a thin layer of protection, meaning it can be applied to a number of materials, such as circuit boards. These coatings are also great for storing reactive compounds. They are also inert, making them ideal for lining materials. These lubricants can be cured at a range of significantly varying temperatures, so they can be applied to a variety of substrates. They are used for a wide range of applications, from lubricating and protecting parts to enhancing the overall performance of a machine.

The coating is applied to one or both threads. It is a solid film lubricant that provides superior friction performance, high wear resistance, and control of galling. Depending on the application, the coating can be applied in less than five minutes.
